Founded in 2003, Lightweight Medical (LWM) established new markets and disrupted old ones through a long-term strategic approach. LWM specialised in the development, certification, logistics and support of mass-market products and user experiences atop complex end-to-end product service systems involving hardware, software and data analysis.

Lightweight Medical developed a new business model for new product innovation. Partnering with the NHS and others to capture long-term value by licensing intellectual property to healthcare companies in exchange for a royalty of sales.

Element Zero Six was LWM’s consultancy arm delivering original product and service development.

Up to 2008 LWM attracted over $800k in revenues per annum, $800k in technology grants, $200k angel investment and 12 topflight staff. Delivering over 20 commercialized projects to 10 key partners and clients. Winning many business and design awards, including Design Week, iF and Red Dot.

In 2007, LWM became a founding shareholder and major contributor to the creation of Onzo, a leader in big-data and analytics for the smart grid with a focus on appliance and lifestyle data. In 2008 the majority of LWM staff accepted fulltime roles at Onzo and relocated from Glasgow to London. LWM is currently a virtual company, managing its existing assets, IP portfolio and Onzo shareholding.

Onzo has hundreds of thousands of users, attracted over $5m in technology grants, $5m VC investment, over 70 topflight staff and a tier-1 manufacturer, Jabil Circuit Inc. Onzo’s first order for SSE Plc in 2008 was for over $10m. Onzo now has clients in EMEA, APAC and North America.
